I saw on AR15 (there is a YouTube vid of it also) of a guy that thought of & built a “Solo 300” as he calls it. A manual operated (not DI or piston) AR pistol. Well, I had Lincoln Logs and Lego’s growing up, so as AR’s are like Lego’s, I decided to build one out of all the parts I had laying in my parts bins.
Following how he built his, I minimized the parts and made it as light as I could. The upper is an American Tactical poly upper that I milled a side charging slot on the left side (I am a right handed shooter), modified BCG (the carrier was cut down to remove the length and weight and tapped the left side for a threaded side charging handle), barrel and barrel nut...only. No gas tube or gas block. The lower is an Anderson with the LPK (except the bolt hold open), and a receiver extension block off that has a pic rail for the attached SB Tactical FS1913 brace (that is easily removable). I have not weighed this yet, but, shooting it one handed isn’t a problem. With my can on it, one handed is doable, but, accuracy definitely suffers.
The only part that cannot be re-used is the bolt carrier. The rest of the build can be re-configured/completed into a DI system if desired with the additional parts required. It is VERY VERY quiet (just like a 300 BLK bolt action is) as there is no cycling action noise and no percussion escaping out the ejection port, when shooting subs. The optic is a Bushnell Fast Fire III that I have zero’d at 75 yards.
Yeah, some will say it’s a waste or not what an AR was designed for, but, again, all parts were “extras” for future builds when desired. Here are the pics of the build:
