Chinese. I've seen a few of these chambered in 7.62x39. They didn't look rebarreled so I suspected a chamber insert. Was never curious enough to try one.
I think that the rifle was in French service after the war adds to it's history. But I think it will hurt it's value as many prefer them in the German configuration. It will only increase in value.
Built at Waffen werke Brunn AG. Estimated production is just over 92k. Looks to be in original configuration ie laminate stock, cupped butt plate, h style upper band. Would need better pictures to tell more.

What springs did you use? Old is old and I've heard not all replacements are equal meaning different lengths.

I like those choices. A 34 was my first carry gun. I regret getting rid of it. A Hi power points naturally and gives up very little to more modern guns IMHO.
I think he will need to try a few to see what he likes. A post war P38 would be a good choice and are affordable. A CZ 27 or a Beretta 34 or 35 are options as well.
