  1. Advice on Beaver problem.

Going back 40 years, there was a major drought, the Altamaha dropped way down, and small tracts of land that had never been cut became accessible. One tract in north Wayne County was cut off by a slough and a pond created by the beavers, They started out busting the the dam in the morning...
  2. Advice on Beaver problem.

I worked with major timber companies in SE Georgia for several years. Learned one thing about controlling beavers, just from listening to the conversations. There is no "controlling" them. They are big rodents, they breed like rodents. Given the opportunity, the timber companies would...
  3. Old home site.

I haven't "stumbled" on it, I know where it is and have visited it several times. It still has tiled "baths" down near the river that are spring fed, that were a major attraction for the hotel.
  4. Old home site.

To OP: I have several good stands of daffodils that I have salvaged from the woods. Yucca plants are another good indicator of a nearby home site.
  5. Old home site.

Just make a mental note of where they are. Knowing where a couple of abandoned wells are can be useful knowledge in some extraordinary circumstances.
  6. WMA Etiquette

You can carry a loaded magazine. Additionally you can't have a round in the chamber even if the magazine is in your pocket. Also the same rules apply to a vehicle. And FWIW, DNR is very serious about enforcing these rules, no "no harm, no foul". In the way back machine, my first deer hunt at...
  7. Hunting on Company Land

Won't bother the locals at all. First, you're making a big assumption that they can read. Secondly, unless you are living on the property, they will have you patterned after the first week. When you walk the property, bet you will be surprised at how many stands you find. Was involved in a...
  8. Deadhead Bucks

I read the article. There is no game violation in Georgia picking up a "deadhead" a term I've never seen used before I read that article. I've seen racks and mounts for sale at auctions and yard sales. According to that author, you would need to call DNR before buying one. What's kinda...
  9. 1980’s Quarter bore draw’s first blood…at least for me.

See of you can find some 90 gr. Winchester PEP. White box, used to be the "economy load" at ,<$20 a box. https://theammosource.com/winchester-super-x-25-06-rem-90-gr-pep-20-rds/
  10. PSA: Coyote stank

I remember the first coyote I shot, some 25 + years ago. We didn't know anything about, we drug it up to where we parked when hunting. Looked at it, took some pictures, left off in the edge of the woods. Came back the next week, we had to find a new parking area, couldn't use the original one...
  11. Deadhead Bucks

if you want to hypertechnical, the dead deer belongs to the landowner, but that is a property issue, not a DNR issue. Calling B.S. on this one.
  12. Any fawns showing up yet?

Had two in my driveway 2 weeks ago. Could barely stand. Mom was having a fit because they were on the edge of a cul de sac. I've seen thousands of deer, never one's that small. Had to less than a day old.
  13. Squirrel hunt question

Course, the problem with the head shot is you have to be real careful when you fry the heads and suck the brains out.
  14. Squirrel hunt question

I use a high power .177 pellet gun. It's not particularly high dollar, but will regularly hit a dime out to 20 yds. I don't favor head shots on game, but this is a special case. Head shot every time.
  15. Ground Hunting

    I quit counting at 300.
  16. Ground Hunting

I'm not trying to be preachy. I'm fortunate in having good year round access to my hunting property, and I'm on it a lot, and always looking for good setups. i think just like fishing, the flood of televised TV shows have emphasized equipment over basic technique and knowledge. I hunt open...
  17. Ground Hunting

I always felt that I had an advantage spotting deer that were slipping through the woods, and generally, i had nearly a 360 degree field of view. i wouldn't have been able to shoot my last deer from an elevated stand.
  18. Is the .35 Remington dead?

it has mostly died out because of two factors: 1. none of the clay target games provide for 16 ga. If you shoot 16 ga. you will be competing against 12 ga. 2. Improvements in 20 ga, have really eliminated the hunting demand for 16 ga. Back in the day of paper shells, fiber wads, 16 ga, guns...
  19. Ground Hunting

I've killed more deer than probably 90% of the people on this forum. The vast majority of them have been killed sitting on a log or a stump, taking advantage of natural cover and terrain. As I've gotten older, I have wimped out and use a stool or chair, but no blind, Last Sat. I killed a nice...
  20. Dove fields

What he said. Unless you can physically exclude the deer, you are pissing money away trying to plant sunflowers for dove. Tried it every which a way for years, and I could fill my bird feeder one time with all the seed we produced. They look good right up to when they are ready to bloom and...
