    The method you describe is stock reduction and yes you can make knives this way. I once took an $8 file and with only a weeks work made a $5 knife from it using this method.

    If you will run over that quickly with a torch and then lightly sand it the grain will likely pop even more. It will cause rapid oxidation of the iron pigmentations. This is essentially aqua fortis, the stain used on most firearms during the 1700-1800 period.
