my wife found an interesting recipe to stain new lumber to make it look old. First you steep some black tea then paint it on the wood. Next shred some extra fine steel wool and soak in vinegar for 24 hours then paint it over the tea stain. Here is a picture showing the results. She started on the right and worked left.

If you will run over that quickly with a torch and then lightly sand it the grain will likely pop even more. It will cause rapid oxidation of the iron pigmentations. This is essentially aqua fortis, the stain used on most firearms during the 1700-1800 period.

Cool I did not know that. The shelves I discussed drilling in my other post turned out a lot darker than I would have wanted them to. Do you think sanding them would make any difference in lightening them a little?

For a similar authentic look on large exposed beams and joists I have seen folk drag them behind a vehicle through a pasture. Much like poser country boys who do that to a new ball cap.
