What turtle is this

I found this thing in the back of my house, the closest natural water source is 1/4-1/2 mile away through dense forest and not an easy trip for this fella. I think he is a slider, but the Red Spots on his head are not the usual markings, he looks mean lol

I believe that is the extremely rare box turtle.

Its a Box turtle, we always called them terrapen's.

ok, that was my first thought,but he was dark and had red colorings that didnt match any pic I saw online. Cool, I appreciate it

From our National Audubon Society book, it looks like it could be a gulf coast box turtle or an eastern box turtle. I have heard that Native Americans used to carrie one around with each family in the tribe, the used them ( box turtles) as a family tree for birth records and deaths. they would scribe names on the the turtles backs. They did this because the turtles lived so long.
