What did this and how do I prevent it?

Took these pics today of one of our Adirondack chairs. Squirrel? Chipmunk? What can I do about preventing further damage? Thanks in advance.

Squirrels gnawed on a family members front porch wood railings. They were seen doing it, so question about it.

Guess they liked the painted wood? There must be some reason as they returned many times to do it.

They repaired the damage to one column with a plastic filler, but the squirrels started on another. Finally stopped though...
