Looks like it is a mixture of truth, and stretching the truth:

http://www.factcheck.org/2009/03/us-offshore-oil-reserves/

The pivotal fact here is whether or not the oil is easily extractable. It doesn't look to be.

Plus, the revised estimate is much smaller in the original estimate:

http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=1911

Any new oil discovery in the u.s. is very good news, but what is important is how practical it would be to get out of the ground.

We really need to be drilling in ANWAR. That stuff is much easier to extract.

Necessity is the mother of invention and regulation is its planned parenthood. Given the price of oil and the obvious financial benefits bringing crude to market, free enterprise will find ways of extracting oil in more efficient ways.

Very true!

I just hope we don't get in a bind before then. Oil is a necessity like no other. There is no way modern society can survive without a lot of it.

Just light the earth on fire and reap the energy from the combustion......makes just as much sense.
