I got the pleasure of going Mule deer hunting once again in West TX the 2nd week in December. I went with the hopes of killing a Muley I missed the yr before, but we never found him. My brother, another client and I spent 5 days hunting in very diverse conditions. In a place that gets 10” of precipitation a good yr we saw heavy fog every am, warm bright afternoons, and even a thunderstorm. With high winds and warm temps 3 days we struggled to glass bucks due to the fact that by the time the fog lifted they were bedded. When we found a good one we were able to close the distance, and kill 2 of the 3 out of there beds.
Day 2 my brother closed in on a nice buck from 1500yds up a mtn to 12, and stick him with an arrow while he was in his bed.
On day 3 a nice shooter skylined on top of a mountain. It was a 1000yd hike from 4500’ ASL to 6800’ ASL to get a 200yd shot on him while still in his bed. I shot him high in the back on the 1st shot, he then stood up for an easy shot to his boiler room. We were literally racing up the mtn to stay ahead of a fog bank that was coming in from the west along with the thunderstorm from the south.
When I hit my buck with the 2nd shot I lost him in the fog bank. I literally had about a minute to crest the hill set up in a prone position, and get the 2 shots off. We went to where he was standing and followed the blood trail 60 yards down the eastern side of the mtn to find him. We waited on the fog bank to clear took pics, and packed him down. Luckily the thunderstorm stayed south of us…nothing like being the tallest thing on a mountain top holding a lightening rod in your hand while a thunderstorm rolls by.
Bow buck below
I also have a video of the bow shot my brother made, but I can’t get it to load. I’ll keep trying.
