The never ending Pass or shoot phenomenon

It is impossible to determine what a deer will be next year. All you know is what you are looking at at that moment. I wish I could find the study done on some captive bucks that revealed that they can and do not only improve, in some cases dramatically from one year to the next as we know, but they can also go 'backwards', dramatically, IN THEIR PRIME, and then recover, and go "back and forth" over their lifetime.
Yes it's true that "most" deer steadily grow more antler during their life until perhaps 6.5 (which would be pretty rare in Georgia for a deer to make it that long) there is no way to know for certain. Similarly, there is statistically no way to "cull" deer as a matter of antler management in a wild free ranging herd.
If he's a trophy to you, shoot him. If you'd rather see what he may become next year, let him walk and you might get to see him yet again. If you think he'd be a trophy for someone else, let him walk and make their day. Might be a kid's first buck.
