Start with plain 'ol Jameison's. Cheap, reliable, pretty representative of the taste. Then go from there...Red Breast is among the best at $65, then try Yellow Spot, unbelievably good, but pricey, around $100.
Yep. Jameson is good stuff. I'll have to put Redbreast on my list.
Ew, no! Stay away from regular Jameson. It's good for making Irish car bombs and that's about it. 18yr Jameson is very good, but around $120+ last time I actually saw it anywhere.
At around the same price as regular Jameson, Slane is a much better bottle of Irish whiskey. I happened across it while browsing and was very surprised at how good it is for less than $30.
Redbreast 12 is good, I haven't tried any of their others.

Black Bush is my go-to econo Irish stuff, and Bushmills 10 year is pretty great.
The Red Breast is solid as are the Yellow and Green Spot. Jameson aged stuff is good, everything else is blended marketing juice. Teeling is also my latest surprise favorite for the Irish stuff.

Tullamore DEW ain't bad and is very inexpensive
Redbreast is where you start.
Amazing whiskey.
I can tell you where I was, who I was with, and what I drink immediately before the first time I ever had Redbreast. It was that memorable.
Connemara if you can find it...
