Should I add a lanyard ring to my H&R 999?

I just got the pistol the other day but plan on using it out in the brush and boat. I have always thought a lanyard was a good idea to prevent loss, but will it kill the value to put an aftermarket lanyard point on? Should I even care since I plan to keep the pistol forever?

Can you loop it on the trigger guard?

The serial number is located on the butt as is the serial number. If the serial number is relocated I think it has to be logged with the ATF but I'm not 100% sure about that. Why not get a good hunter type holster with a retention strap?
