S&W 22 Mag

What a 22mag needs is ammo designed for optimal performance out of a short pistol barrel instead of an 18" rifle.

22 mag ammo is about 33 cents per round. Not cheap for a rimfire.
Occasionally 5.7 can be had for about 66 cents per round.

I guess when I blinked, things changed.

I see there are now several manufacturers making 22 mag ammo designed for short barrels.

I have seen several videos looking at this ammo type.

It is amazing how well they do in ballistic gel tests even shot from a 2"-barrel revolver.

Hornady - 22 WMR 45 gr FTX® Critical Defense: 1000 fps from a 1.875" barrel

Federal - Personal Defense Punch Rimfire 22 WMR 45 Grain: 1000 fps from a 2" barrel

Speer - Gold Dot Short Barrel 22 WMR 40 Grain: 1050 fps from a 2" barrel

I handled one at Palmetto State Armory store while passing through last week. I like it, but the grip shape is substantially different from my M+P 57. More triangular like the PMR. It feels nice in the hand but much heavier than PMR. I was hoping it would feel like my 57 in the hand and make a good training weapon but it's a different grip style.

Any of y'all seen or shot the S&W 22 mag?

22plinkster has high praise for it.

Honest outlaw not so much.

If it is reliable, great.

No one wants a jamamatic.
Yep. I picked one up from Georgia Gun Store.
Only issue I've had so far is the polymer tipped ammo.
It really likes this stuff:
