Mine could easily fit in my shirt pocket. It's probably the Kenwood that Hawkeye7 is pointing to.sounds complicated. are they big and bulky? or small enough to be carried say in a back pack?

This is the Kenwood a friend suggested. He has used this radio and really liked it. Very small and light.

As far as information gathering, ham and cb are two really good shortwave options you can have on the cheap IMO, but don't forget about am. Likely to be the first global voice after the SHTF.

Although the unlicensed Citizens Band is 40-channels (26.985mhz to 27.405mhz) besides AM, most CB's have upper and lower sideband like ham radios which is better for clearer and long distance communications.
