Get a 20 ga single cut off part of the stock to fit but save the wood get a 410 Guage Mate (about $ 39) which is a tube you insert into the barrel and put the shell into the tube. In 2-3 years as he grows screw the wood back onto the stock, and he can keep shooting the 410, or take the tube out and he can shoot the 20. I use the 20 ga Guage Mates in my double 12 for rabbit hunting and they work great

A single shot 410 is perfect for a first hunting weapon. If you go with a 22lr, it's going to be very frustrating because it is very hard to take small game with a rifle in many situations. Most 8 year olds need a more forgiving weapon than a rifle.

A sq. can get out of .410 range just by running up a tall tree. Upside is it'll give a good lesson on patterning your choke and load and limiting shots to your maximum effective range. If you could find a 28ga within your budget that'd be much better. A PAST recoil shield is a good idea even with a light .410.
