Machete

CRKT makes a few. I have a 'Halfachance', they also make the 'Chanceinhell.' Anywhere from $50-70. I've chopped down small trees with mine. It sucked on my hands and joints, but it did it.

Machetes have their limitations and will disappoint (and tire you) in trying to cut larger things as you state and forget about trying to baton wood for kindling processing with a machete.
The Kershaw Camp series (14 and 18) will handle what you need and then some and I can attest they hit with authority with their thicker blades.

Sir, these are great.

All these dudes are bsing, I can show you what a gavilan can do!!! Behind my subdivision( land owned by my association ) there is a pond stocked with bass and bream. The issue was making a path and cutting out fishing spots. If weather permits I will post pictures tomorrow of what I did with my machete! I have cut trees as thick( pines) as 4x4s or more and even barbed wire. Technique and weight makes a huge difference when using a machete !
