Kids hunting rifles

95 gr. projectile at 3000 fps is whipping for a 270 diameter bullet from a light package. Reloading is even better than that with a good S2W ( strength to weight) ratio barrel like the DD CHF barrel for right at 300.

My wife likes her Grendel, too.

AAC Handi-Rifle in .300BLK. Very light, easy to handle, and threaded. Only downside was the barrel is so short I had to watch carefully that he didn’t point it the wrong way. Adding the suppressor helped with that though as well as the noise.

If he's handling that rifle OK, I'd leave him alone. The one issue I have is that rifle is capable of firing multiple rounds at a time. In case of an accident on his part. I like the bolt idea, but you're already at 7lbs. You won't get a set up much lighter with a scope on it. And if you do, then you're dealing with recoil. And you're already in 30cal. If it's length of pull and you don't have an adjustable stock on it, install one

Never hunted deer, and probably just talking out of my a**, but why not 223 bolt? Light, and with right bullets more than effective on out tiny deer
