We went over the pass in an oncoming snow storm in 1995 and of course I hadn't taken my wife's urging to buy chains beforehand so we had to buy mismatched (overpriced)set on the side of the road if you didn't have chains or snowtires they would not let you go through because you might risk wrecking and blocking the highway.
It was quite an adventure luckily we made it through ahead of the worst of the storm before Mount Shasta or else we would have had to put them back on and taken them off again after Shasta. Out there guys hustle some extra cash by sitting on the side of the road in snowstorms and offering to put people's chains on their tires for cash for those who don't want to get out and get their clothes wet or dirty.
