Im Sure we can narrow it down to 38 S&W or 38 Special.
During wartime Colt and Smith didn't have time to keep a feed going.
And I'm fairly sure not many 38S&Ws or shorts were made after the war.
Not saying that's written in stone.
But 38 Special dominated the niche after the war.

If this gun is 38special, and the timing is still lined up correctly when the hammer drops, it's not a bad deal.
