Sorry, red dot newbie question: would this work with other similar red dots or just primary arms? when it is flipped to side does it lock into place well? tia

It'll work with a similar optic (I had it mounted with an Aimpoint), you just need to make sure the height of the optic and magnifier are the same. This is the 1.64 inch model ( http://www.primaryarms.com/pa-flip-mount-std-height/p/pamqf-01/ ).

The flip to side mount locks up pretty tightly. If you try, you can get a little play in it, but it wouldn't flip back on you or anything like that.
