How do I find my chamber length w/o using a chamber length gauge?

Smutting, inking, etc, is the way I've done it for years. Some rounds need more freebore than others. I can't recommend jamming just any high pressure round into the lands.

I bet there's a thread already here that describes easy ways to do it. You may try a search. I know there's thread at GON and other sites that cover the subject pretty well. Seems like manuals may have a good description of how to smut a bullet.

I'm sure there are some threads here that cover it pretty well, I just didn't feel like sifting through them. I'll check my literature and see what I can figure out.
