I used to have a 35 year old patient in a semi-vegetative state. He could not communicate. He was a tree cutter and a tree crushed his skull when he was in his 20s. He was bed ridden and could not even stay upright in a wheelchair. His bowels did not move at all. He had to have a suppository every other day.

I didn't work that hall very often, but one night he drew the short straw and had me for his nurse. He was never very happy it seemed on these "every other nights"...I went in with a couple of CNAs to help me roll him over. I held up the well lubricated suppository and asked, "Don't these kinda look like bullets? He chuckled. This was a bit of a breakthrough with this guy. So I went on..."Yeah...like a big ol greasy butt bullet" He laughed again. As I was putting it in, I made "ptsheeeew" kinda gun sound. He howled with laughter. I walked out saying..."Man, I hope you didn't enjoy that too much. That is not the type of male bonding I personally enjoy" lol
