A few years back while browsing a local Goodwill, they had a properly folded and encased in wooden display wool American flag that another veteran told me was most likely from World War I. I was really disturbed that whosever family owned it got rid of it and that GW would sell it like a regular item. I snatched it up, brought it home and am still prominently displaying it along with other military memorabilia I have. Thanks.

Have a seamstress fix the holes and any threading that needs fixing and hang it someplace special or give it to a current vet to pass it along...a vet will take care of it and help keep it preserved and maintained...

I would carefully and respectfully stitch up the problem areas and display it. Our Legion Post near me "retires" flags on the 4th of July every year with a huge bonfire and ceremony. It may get burnt up if you turn it in.
Dont let it get retired...its still well into its life and obviously has been taken care of thus far
