Greetings fellow ODT'rs!

I'm trying to find out the approx. production date on my Norinco MAK-90 Sporter. From what I'm reading online, the first two numbers of the MAK-90's 6+ digit serial number indicates year made, bearing in mind MAK-90's were imported during the Clinton assault weapons ban era, between 1990-1994. So (and please correct me if I'm wrong), the first two digits of a MAK-90 should be 90,91,92,93, or 94.

So, here's what's puzzling; my "Made in China by Norinco" MAK-90 Sporter has a FIVE digit serial number- 52XXX.
Aside from the 5-digit serial number, the front trunion contains no other numbers, letters, or symbols.

Could this be an early edition put together from pre-ban parts? Would it have any effect on collectibility or value?

Thanks in advance for any historical facts, links, and/or help figuring this out.

Semper fi!

As I understood it the year prefix only was added to the guns that came in under the ban but before it occurred and were awaiting import...I’ve only ever seen a 93 and 94 prefix but this is all just personal knowledge and I’m no expert

Right, not 93 or 94. Not one of the early, early ones caught in transition. These generally have any old markings stamped/lined out or milled outs and have any written notations or extras electropenciled. The first ones had "SP" for Sporter or "Sporter". This one is a early MAK-90, this is how you write it, 91 or 92 I would guess. That is a factory built rifle.
