Ewwww! That's nastahy! Looks like an over-full tick and it gave the it the infections! Shoot it then kill it with fire! (the tick)
I think your on the right track, good answer.
Don't go back in the woods.....that deer is waiting for you, she's scouting you and waiting.
If I were to guess, id say it was attacked and either has a tick or infection.
1. Look closely at the left eye lid, see there are two cuts on it compared to the right eye.
2. The major trauma is on the snout, if you look, there are roughly 4 cuts to the snout area starting at the eye socket towards the mouth
That is how I came to the conclusion you have a rare, "Norris Deer", it kicked the crap out of whatever snagged it in the face lol

It's a wart. One of my bosses had one right next to his eye with a hair growin out of it. Couldn't look him in the eye without staring at it.
that is why we have dermatologists.. ewwwwww
