Critter Chewing Around Nail Heads

We live out a bit, but not really "in the country". Most neighbors have extra acreage and we're on a couple of acres that back up to a lot of other undeveloped acres of woods. Anyway, something is chewing up our Masonite siding. Most everything we've noticed has been at a nail hole or at a corner. Anybody got experience with what could be doing this?

Could be anything, squirrel, regular rats, chipmunks etc... Cheap trailcams are your friend.

Went to gather in all my trail cams and they're all dead. Bummer.

Get some glue traps and put them around the baseboards. If it is small critters you will catch a few and be able to figure out what is causing the problem.

Trying to figure out a way to do this and keep our dog and random birds from getting stuck. It's only outdoors.

Put the traps in a box with holes in each end. Critters like to hide in places like that. Dogs and birds won't bother it.

Squirrels chewing the nail to keep their teeth short.
Little bastids ate my siding up in Lawrenceville. Mostly around nails.

Woodpeckers were doing it on our house. Looks same as your pics. I replaced the damaged boards, then had the house painted, which was needed. No problems since the paint job(a year ago).
