Coon hunting with a dog

I got me a American leopard hound of the Meeks line. He’s a year old now and I wanna get him hunting coons. Any advice?

Yeah I’ve heard it could take him a second but I’ve also heard competition guys say a year is a good time to start lol

here is my advice if can find fresh rd kill coon handle with with gloves take home let pup play with it then take it away put dog up out site wait a bit tie rope to coon Caracas drag thru woods throw rope over a small tree let dead coon hang off ground turn pup loose see if he track it if so he finds it praise the dog if gets good at this trap u a live coon put in small round pen some thing maybe put up on high log if barks shows interest more praise (AT THIS TIME IN HIS LIFE DONT LET HIM FIGHT COON HAVE SEEN SOME GOOD YOUNG DOGS RUINED LIKE THIS GETTING EAT UP BY COON. FIND U SOMEONE THAT COON HUNTS HAS GOOD STRAIGHT DOGS THAT DOESNT RUN TRASH LIKE DEER FOX ETC. IF DOG TREES COON TIE YOUR DOG HAVE SOME SHOOT COON OUT DEAD WITH A 22 COONS HITS GROUND DEAD LET PUP WRESTLE IT AROUND IF GOT MUCH SENSE FIGURE IT OUT. DONT SHOOT AROUND YOUR DOG ALOT AND MAKE HIM GUN SHY DOG HAS TO RELATE WHEN GUN GOES POP ITS SOMETHING FUN AND HE WANTS SOME OF IT HOPE THIS HELPS

better find some hunters in your area. its becoming a lost art. Expensive to keep dogs and folks wont let you on their land and be in shape

Hounds are pack hunters and learn from each other. I wouldn’t even bother with trying to train one without a good pup trainer(older dog that knows the ropes who isn’t tree possessive), and I’ve had many hounds and coon hunted for years.
