It is a 38 s&w round, not 38 special. That is if you stuck a 38 special in it and it fit, but was too long. Before the 38 special came around the 38 3&8 was a popular caliber. I collect old H&R pistols and would be interested in buying it, but as stated above they are obsolete and not worth much.
 
I too collect H&Rs, but mostly .22s. I do have a model 925 in .38S&W, some call it 38 short. Ammo is high and hard to find. It is not a high powered round so if you find some and want to shoot it you would probably be OK, Best to have a reliable smith check it out first though. H&R did make some nice breaktops though, I buy every one I can find for $300.00 or less. I wish they still made the model 999 Sportsman, gues it just got too expensive to make .
