How difficult is this? More specifically, does a commander slide and barrel drop in (with minor fitting?) on to an Officer's frame? Or is there more to it?

no, used frame
Understand that the slide and barrel are already worn to the original frame. I typically started with oversized parts and then fitted everything. Undersized makes it a bit more difficult.
Depending on your dust cover length , it should be fine. I built one years ago for a dear friend, and it turned out nice.
