I've got a family acquaintance that can never seem to keep their head above water financially. They aren't the sharpest tool in the shed either, always in between jobs, blows money on pot, etc. I get a text this morning asking if I can help with money ASAP to fix their brakes on their car. Apparently they've been needing replacement for a while now and they've been putting it off because they can't keep a job and are always behind on rent/food/etc. Anyways, text says, "Hey can I borrow $$ to get my brakes fixed this morning? I lost $300 betting on the Super Bowl last night" followed by profanities about "how they should have won and were winning until the Chiefs pulled ahead it's all their fault blah blah."

I had no other response except to say LOL you bet $300 on the Super Bowl when you're broke?

I haven't heard back since. Oh well. 🤷‍♂️

You handled it right. As for your friend well:
