The right punch helps. the link below is for the Starrett punch with a cupped tip to stay on the pin and is the perfect size for starting those little buggers out. A couple good wacks with a 16 oz hammer does the trick everytime.

Yeah "most" of the pins are tapered.. LMT and a couple others use straight pins, though. I've always used a large mallet and a wider punch first to break them loose and make them flush with the sight, then follow up with a more narrow punch to finish. And yeah, like some others have said - I believe they need to be driven out with the ejection port-side facing up. Good luck and watch your fingers..
