You probably could....but I wouldn't

If it is torqued correctly, you could tweak something if not using an upper block. You would likely need to leave the upper on the lower and use the pistol grip for leverage. That could be bad juju.
 
You think I can use the ar wrench and change the barrel without an upper block?

Sounds like the makings for another help needed thread....

Use the vice block or reaction rod. It's an easy way to keep from destroying your upper.

Leaving the receivers together you could tweak either receiver, the pivot pins, crack the PG, strip the PG threads....Vice blocks are cheaper than new receivers.
