I just re-watched two hunting scenes from this movie and it does indeed look like a left-handed action on DeNiro's rifle.

I remember watching that movie thinking they aren’t hunting in our mountain range cause I grew up in mill town Pa along the Ohio river and have been all over Appalachia up there, including West Virginia and Virginia where a lot of hardcore Pittsburgh hunters may hunt.
Turns out the hunting mountain scenes were filmed in Washington state.
Kinda weird but I guess they saved money doing it there and wanted different mountain effects or weather may have been more suitable there for the foliage and time of year.
