This was the #1 gun on my Bucket List when my wife bought it for me for our 30th anniversary this year.

Made in 1942, she’s a standard model. In fantastic shape overall, and shoots like a dream.

I plan on installing a repro rear peep sight on the bolt, which will involve drilling and tapping the top of the bolt, as well as machining two grooves.

I’m heading to Grass Range MT next October for my first elk hunt. My plan is to take this old Winchester 71. With a solid rear peep sight, and a good handload, I feel confident to at least 300 yards.

Love my 71. If you need some brass to get you started let me know.

Thanks! Starline makes brass, and I have 80rds of Hornady Flex-tip that I’ve been shooting off to have fun, and get the brass.

Looking at bullet selection, and leaning towards a 250grn Hawk FP right now. I’d like to start hand loading for .348 and .375 Winchester by the first of the year.

Starline brass is always good to go and they have it in stock most of the time.

From a lot of reading it always seemed the 200gr bullets were usually more accurate but given the distances most shoot lever guns probably not much of an issue.

I’ve wanted to buy a mold and try casting for the 348 but given how little I shoot it I have a lifetime supply of jackets FP bullets. Lol.

I need to look at what will shoot well, and keep good energy and penetration out to at least 300yds.
