Won on Gunbroker and due in soon. What type of ammo is safe for it and where can I get it?

I'm pretty darned sure that's a black powder cartridge gun.
They use them at the Buffalo Rifle shoot at the range.
I think it's a 45-70. Helluva big round, huge chunk of lead and everyone makes their own.

I don't know from experience only from watching and talking with them.

Just checked I think I got all that right.
.45 caliber bullet and 70 grains of black powder, hence .45-70.
Now I've never asked or notice if they're using f, ff or fff black powder, but my bet would be ff.
(405 grain bullet)

i've heard (as long as the rifle is in good fireable condition) any box of Remington 45-70 that says on box "for use in any rifle" is okay for the old trapdoors, the bullets are usually just lead no jacket. Also just look up or find someone who sells cowboy loads for 45-70's.
i bought one myself a while ago... have some ammo just to afraid to shoot her.

Neat rifle. One of the great transition firearms from the the muzzle loading to breech loading eras. If you are going to fire it, I would use "soft loads", light lead bullets with reduced BP charges.

I use these in my 1873 trap door. They work great and are especially made for the older trap door rifles that require the soft lead bullets and lower pressures.
