Sounds like its overfueling at idle. The slow/intermediate jet may be a tad too big. Most exhaust mods lean an engine out so it has probably been jetted at some point. If it runs ok and only smokes when you goose it at idle, I'd leave it alone. You'll probably see some popping on decel but... -

Its not very likely. Put a meter on it. Rev it and see what the voltage goes to. Should hit about 13.8-14.2VDC on that bike at about 2500 rpm. If it does, it aint the stator. Sounds like carbs. Easy, but not quick, fix. Put a couple of ounces of Sea Foam in a full tank of gas. Might take a couple of times. That should clean it out. Most likely fix it completely. If not, hit me up and we'll see about rejetting or whatever. Black smoke means a rich condition so plugs... -

9.9 hp Mercury to 15 hp?
Can't speak for boat motors but I have plenty of experience with V-Twin bike motors. If you change to that big of a carb, you can get 30-40% more HP (depending on cam and compression) but you WILL load up with fuel in the idle circuit. How many Harley Riders do we have on here?????
Currently ride a 94 FXR. EV59 cam, S&S heads, S&S Super 'E' carb, 2 into 1 pipe. Wife gave it to me for my birthday. Last bike was a 79 Lowrider. That thing had over 100k miles when I got rid of it. Rebuilt more than I care to remember. Before that... 68 Ironhead. Chopped with a twisted springer...
