    Lots of good advice and info here. That's why I keep coming back. Thanks guys. I've been waiting years to take him and on New years day for the first time he wanted to go with me. It was 27 degrees and he took it like a champ. I think he really liked it!

    thx Biker, I shot my first deer with a Remington 1100 (slug) back in the day. I can't remember how old I was though. I have a mossberg 500, but thought it might get heavy for him.

    Agreed, I didn't want him dreading the shot and pulling it. He went out on his first hunt with me this year and seems interested. I don't want to spook him..lol

    I thought about my AR 223/5.56 as well. It's a 16 inch barrel, so not sure if hunting rounds are made for it.

    Thanks guys, I have my dad's 30-30 that was the second gun I learned to hunt with. I planned to pass it down to him anyway, so this makes it perfect. My dad in heaven would love to know he is going to hunt with it. The largest rifle he has shot was a .22, so I didn't want to step it up to much...

    I'm thinking .243. Looking for lower end recoil. (I did search and didn't find much on here about the subject.) I'm sure it's been covered 1000 times.

    I agree with you on most of what you wrote. I'm not a guy that picks up gimmick products. But I wont lie, I'm trying different stuff this year to see if I'm wrong. I figure smoking my cloths won't cost me a thing too.
