Just call the Ga Forestry commission for the burn permits. After 15 years I have never been denied a burn permit number. Of course, I didn’t call them when the wind was 15 miles an hour.
Burning is great when done correctly. I have several stands that I burn on a three year schedule. So every year I burn two or three stands. Some are only three acres+ and go up to about 15 acres. All natural timber.
Been in the woods all my life and only remember seeing one scarlet king.
I keep our pine stands on a three year burn rotation. Sometimes four years, depending on weather. Keeps them looking great. Have a small covey of quail every year or two, but can’t consistently keep them.
I have been “kicked off” land that I had permission to hunt and they have been poaching for years. Well, they tried to kick me off. One guy was with his 10 year old son. I asked him to step away from his son and I tried to speak softly so the son could not hear. The dad finally got the message...
I also give them a pass. They are scarce in some areas and common in others. They prefer open forested areas with a sparse canopy. If you keep the stands burned off, it will help attract them.
It will green up fairly fast and next year it will look great.
Turkeys love fresh burns also.
I try to burn a third of my property every year. It is one of the best game and timber management tools there is. Once you get the fire lanes established, it's fairly easy.
