Found this little guy down by the river today, a little more than head high in this tree. This area floods pretty good so all I can figure is he drowned when the river was up and was lodged there.
Or maybe they actually can fly and he crash landed?
I will say that last Saturday they quit moving right after sunrise. I think the cold and wind put them up.
We have a competition at work the first Saturday after deer season end every year so we were all doing that. Every team had low numbers compared to most years. Winning pair had 14.
Cool. Me and my buddy tried night hunting last year but even after patterning the pigs with trail cams, we never could get on them.
Any suggestions or pointers for day stalking?
Guess the 2nd “rut” is over as I saw three bucks cordially together about 5:15. One was a nice 8 pointer we had on camera but haven’t seen in person. I let him go but if he keeps showing up closer to season end, he might get it.
No restrictions as they’re considered varmints. 22LR should do it, especially a head shot. Even if it runs off, the others will kill it if it’s injured usually.
Haven’t shot a thing. I can tell I’m getting old cause I’d rather sit and watch deer than kill them.
Seen one good shooter but couldn’t get him to stop for a shot and didn’t wanna risk a bad one.
I always say this. Most rifles aren’t as accurate as their owners think and the owner is even less accurate than the rifle. Still fine for hunting though cause that deer isn’t as far away as they think either…
One less varmint around. Pretty sure this is the same mutt I’ve been seeing in broad daylight a lot lately. Was literally in my yard at 4pm about a week ago but got gone before I could get a rifle and get outside. Caught him in the back pasture just about sundown last night.
It can be done but don’t expect optimal performance. If your goal is just to bond and have fun, go for it.
Personally though, I’d get a pump gun combo with two barrels. A Maverick 88 for example is cheap and with a HD barrel and a field barrel, you’d be miles ahead of the coach gun.
If you shoot that 270 the best, I’d use that and a suitable, heavy bullet.
If you’re confident you can shoot them all well, just take the biggest for insurance: 300WM.
