According to this there is now a fee for the Amateur Radio license that has reduced the cost of the GMRS license.

I did not unfortunately. I’ll give it a shot next week. Chances are pretty slim I’ll pick them up. I’m about 100 miles from Rome so, unless I hit some sort of oddball propagation or raise my antenna up, (not really in the cards right now) I doubt I can pick them up. I’ll give it a try just for...
I doubt I can pick it up. Seems like Mount Waleska is the best I can do from that direction from my location. I’ll tune in tomorrow evening just to see.
I thought there might have been several of the late night chat groups. Sorry for misunderstanding.
Are you running a 7300 as a mobile 40m rig? I thought that was more of a base station style radio rather than a mobile rig. More power (pun intended,) to you if you can make it work. :). I’d love to see pictures of that rig once you have it running in your truck.
You’re going to be limited with the rubber duck antenna that came with your radio. A mag mount and a large pizza pan would do wonders for your ability to pick up more stuff.
Another alternative is to take a ride with your new HT and see where you have to be to hit some of the other repeaters...
You can identify yourself and ask for a signal report. If anyone is monitoring it will give you an idea of how well your signal is being received. Kerchunking the repeater is not a good indicator. You can also get out on 146.520 MHz and call CQ. That is the All Call frequency for 2m. Look...
I’ve used it once to participate in a net that was on a repeater that was out of range of my equipment. It’s basically an internet link to the net but still runs through a repeater and is transmitted. You can talk to people all over the world.
No.
Not in the manner you're thinking of at least. You can run quite a bit of stuff through APRS all over the world but still need a licensed operator on the other end.
At best you can get a message to another operator who can then relay your message to whomever you're trying to call.
If you’re in a hole then NVIS is really your only option however, the best thing to do is to set up your station and work with it. Figure out what you need to do to hit those specific distances as regularly and reliably as possible. A dipole is relatively inexpensive in the grand scheme of...
