I absolutely get it. I drive either a Suburban getting 16 mpg or my motorcycle gets around 80 mpg. I'm not at all interested in an EV for myself. Just pointing out that a 100 mile commute is not the obstacle for an EV.
I understand that, but electric cars can easily have 200+ mile range. Teslas can have 400+ mile range. So even in Atlanta, an EV is certainly doable with a 100 mile round trip commute.
That's because your common fire extinguisher won't do much good if the batteries are on fire. But there's not really any more risk of fire than driving around with 30 gallons of gasoline in the fuel tank. Electric cars are not just spontaneously combusting like that.
