Maybe because it's a bushing, and metal on plastic usually moves better than metal on metal. Purely speculating...I don't know.

Pretty sure this is the correct answer. You could pay for an aftermarket aluminum one and have to replace it when it wears out.
I'm not a huge fan of little plastic parts in guns either, but I think in this case it is the correct material for the job.
....but I could be wrong.
