First, please pardon a minor comment on nomenclature of survival: Both SHTF (think fertilizer on the fan) and TEOTWAWKI, (The End Of The World As We Know It), are useful concepts for someone who seeks to prepare his or her loved ones for the future, but they are different. SHTF is best understood as a reference to bad things (pretty bad, very bad, or hideously bad) happening to you and yours in your house, neighborhood, or town. TEOTWAWKI is best understood as a reference to such bad things occurring on a wider scale, generally nationally or globally. As indicated by an earlier writer, SHTF can look as "normal" as losing your job, your daughter's illness, a sinkhole, gas leak, or divorce. TEOTWAWKI generally is envisioned to involve hyper-inflation, disruption of food supplies, and loss of the power grid, to name a few. The effectiveness of our communications will improve if we use the terms in this way.
As to what is likely to happen -- I'm much more likely to lose my job than to have to fight off zombies, more likely to find prices out of reach than to see foreign troops rolling down main street, more likely to try to avoid a terrible flu-like illness than to have to hide from ebola. But here's what's cool -- if the unlikely apocalyptic threats help me to store some water in the basement or buy a few extra cans of beans at Kroger, they'll help me through the lesser disasters just the same!

My prediction is a simple one that I've observed brewing for the past three decades:
1) The left continues to feed the neocons with horror stories about "illegal immigration" as they like to call it
2) The government allows the people to fret over the little brown people working at MickeyDs while the real damage is being done by the far left, financially destroying America and making sure that everyone they possibly can is dependent upon a government check
3) The LEO community helps create the hysteria in border towns while the economists are saying that immigration is playing less and less a role in our financial situation
4) Places like Arizona let up on the carry laws, but with a sinister plan in mind. They have their "useful idiots" as the communists would have called them, making sure there is panic and hysteria 24 / 7 / 365
5) At some point, some individual or some group will declare a unilateral war against the Hispanics
6) A State of Emergency will be called; weapons will be subject to confiscation
7) The men and the technology that was assembled under the guise of protecting us from ourselves will be taken off the border and turned loose in warrant less search / seizure, weapons confiscation exercises
8) The economy will implode
9) While the Sarah Palin's and Glenn Becks are fretting over the little brown people, the Ultimate Police State will be mobilized against America
10) We wake up to find that a new form of government has been instituted to "make us safe" and we will be under the rule of a socialist / democracy owned and controlled by a few elite multi national corporations.

I've always had a problem with that "illegals" terminology. They haven't been arrested much less tried and Americans use the word "illegals." And it is important. Americans get killed because the so - called "Patriot Act" allows the LEO community to presume you're guilty... same as with Hispanics. Even on the extreme side, the show COPS used to state that "all suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law."
Sadly, you are right on point. "Fear of the different" is part of our evolutionary path, & many good, patriotic, hard working, honest Americans have been deceived into believing that a significant portion of our national ailments are the result of illegal immigration. I'm sure there is a real problem in Arizona, but freedom-loving Americans follow a dangerous path when they forget that police state tactics can be used against them as well.
It will be war, sooner or later the US will be invaded and a world war will be fought on US soil, the US military keeps putting it's nose where it don't belong and will one day wake up a sleeping beast.
Which Giant will that be?
We have not had a "civil war" yet. That war in 1861-1865 was a war of independance from northern agression. There was a government formed, a constitution written and a standing army and navy formed. We will see factional strife and anarchy from people fighting over the scraps left over by a collapsed system. There will be no .gov army left. People will have to decide do I take care of my family or go where they tell me and do what they tell me to.... Most will choose family.
