Many of the type of Type 38 carbines rebarrelled and rechambered for the 7.62×39mm round. Some Type 38 rifles captured by the Kuomintang forces were also converted to fire the 7.92×57mm Mauser round

Any other marks on the receiver? In front of the serial number maybe?
Yes, looks like a shark/cat eye. What's the deal with it?
There's also a very small mark behind the arsenal stamp.
That's a "Series Mark." I'll look it up (at the front of the serial number). It's likely a 26th Series rifle. Could be 24-26 though. Your serial number is in that range (26th).
The mark following is going to be an inspector's stamp.
Also is there any trick to getting the cleaning rod out? I can't pull it out. It will spin freely but seems "stuck"

See my edited post above. I couldn't tell when it was manufactured as I have only Honeycutt's book. The Japanese manufactured 6.4 million (+ or -) of this type rifle in many arsenals.
