Sorry, but the story just doesn't ring true.
A letter dated 1903 would have been placed
in the box when the tree was about 32 y/o.
The tree growing for the last 118 years since
letter was inserted would have raised the mailbox
probably to an unreachable height.
Not buying the reason for opening it to be search
for local history and a good story either. Come on
now, admit it. You were hoping for a 1903 Birthday
card with a $1 silver certificate in it weren't you?

Trees don't grow that way, they grow from the tips.
However, it might have grown around the box.
