When mine was 9 he was a good bit more than 55 lbs.
He got a Ruger American 22 lr.
I had a 10/22 at about the same age & I remember going thru a lot of ammo.
In theory a bolt will force him to make his shots count more than with a semi-auto.
I’d wait till the fellow was 75+ lbs before I introduced a 20 gauge pump unless he was just going crazy for it.
Personally a bit of sweat equity would be good also.
Mine got a BPS at 11 because I wasn’t found of Mossbergs & 870 20 gauges were liken to hens teeth 3 years ago.
It was spendy but,
He enjoys it now.
Maybe consider buying something now if you run across it & put it up till it fits him: not a lot worse for a kid than shooting a gun that don’t fit.
