Can anyone confirm that this is in fact a 5100?
Does anyone know the value of a 1955 Stevens Savage Arms Corporation Chicopee Falls, Mass, USA side by side 16ga gun with 28" barrels, looks to be hand checkering, & a cool pointer on the receiver?
BACK STORY & A LITTLE RESEARCH IF YOU CARE:
I have the task of dealing with some of my dad's guns after passing. Most of them I'm good to go with but the one I've know of since childhood eludes me the most. I actually pheasant hunted with this side by side when I was a teen back when 16ga wasn't such an odd thing. Either way I always thought it was a Winchester, but memory is a funny thing when faced with the engraving on the side that says Stevens Savage!
It appears to be a 5100 from the stamp on the other side of the receiver, guess they weren't very proud of models back then because it sure is small! I also learned that serial numbers weren't a thing for all companies prior to 1968. I did some digging and I believe I found "From 1948 to 1968 the letter symbols under the frame were changed to a ‘Capital letter with a one or two digit number’ in a 1/4″ circle. This was a date code which you will find illustrated in the Savage-Stevens-Fox pages of your Standard Catalog of Firearms" and "Savage SS /DB / OU shotgun date code A 1949 B 1950 C 1951 D 1952 E 1953 F 1954 G 1955 H 1956 I 1957 J 1958 K 1959 L 1960 M 1961 N 1962 P 1963 R 1964 S 1965 T 1966 U 1967 V 1968 W 1969 X 1970" information came from: https://www.leeroysramblings.com/savage_-stevens_311_series _double.html (hope that can help someone else)
This one is stamped "G" inside a circle, K A and then I think an inspectors stamp of 7 on the receiver. The forend, locking mechanism, and barrel(s) all have the same circle G K A on them so it's a "numbers matching" shotgun. I believe that makes it produced in 1955.
I wish I had some memories of shooting this with my father, but I only used it hunting with friends. It's pretty cool but if it is worth anything, my mom could use the money more than I can use another shotgun. Funny thing is to this day I use a double barrel, just an over/under. The things that influence us are sometimes unknown until it is to late to be able to ask. In the meantime, hopefully these pics bring someone else back some memories and maybe my little bit of research might help someone else.
