Is it legal to shorten the barrel on a Maverick 88 cruiser? If so what would a gunsmith charge?

I have 1 now at my gunsmith, it's a Winchester Ranger, my Gunsmith is charging me $100. I'm going with a 18 1/2 inch barrell.

I wish, I knew how, but your right. I'm getting it for my wife as a home defense shotgun. She said the Remington 870 I bought her was to heavy.
What length is it now?

You can cut it as short as you want, IF you pay "the man". $200.00 "tax stamp" to BATF for anything shorter than 18 inches BEFORE YOU CUT.
I've got a nice folding 28" single shot I'd love to get shortened by 10" (has a 28 now). Got a gunsmith quote of $125 to shorten and re-tap the front bead sight but I only have $100 in the gun! There's got to be a cheaper alternative (besides a hacksaw)!
