shooting on my property.

First you would lose. There are enough anti gun and socialists people out there would would love for only criminals to have guns. Why try to give them ammunition for their cause for something that’s probably not save. Usually shooting on 1/3 acre where there are others houses probably isn’t responsible shooting. Every case is different but I’m picturing houses that meet this criteria and most are irresponsible, there was only 1 that it was appropriate and the neighbor who owned 1000 acres surrounding the property didn’t mind and we always were respectful

If you have a substantial backstop and can keep 100% of your rounds on your property, you should and I should be fine.
Your mileage may vary. Not within a 1000ft school.no source listed, but it is a federal law. " google it ", or use firefox or start page . All I use for finding things. 99.9% anonymous

Bumping this thread for a new twist.

Suppose you wanted to buy a 4-acre parcel of land up in the North Georgia mountains.

Suppose this was in a very rural area, where nobody would complain about shooting, but you still have to follow state law.

This 4-acre parcel of land is shaped like a square, and let's say it's approximately EDITED TO CORRECT MY ERROR: 420 feet by 420 feet.

So, can you build a private shooting range on it by clearing a shooting lane of trees and bushes and making a big pile of dirt and logs for a backstop?

Well, that state law about not shooting within 50 yards of a road (unless you have a commercial or otherwise business-related range that has been officially licensed and approved by the County) will really limit what kind of distances you can shoot.

If your property has a public road running along one of its sides, that means that if you shoot directly away from that road (the safest way, we all agree, right?) you'd have to be 150 feet deep into that lot where you stand. That's your firing line. You'd only have another 270 feet before you reach the end of your property, and you'd better allow at least 30 feet for your backstop mound. So your "shooting range" might have to be only 80 yards.

Our Georgia law, however, would not be offended if you made your firing line on the part of your land farthest away from the road, and shot toward it! But that wouldn't be safe, even with a decent backstop.

Maybe the Georgia law about not shooting near roads could be avoided by making your shooting lane PARALLEL to the public road, but 51 yards deep into your property. Then you could maximize your range.

THE BETTER ANSWER to this problem is for Georgia to amend the shooting law to say that the minimum distance from the road for recreational shooting or hunting is only 50 feet, not 50 yards.

.

With all due respect to learned counsel, you might want to check those dimensions.

You could say it's approximately 200 feet by 220 feet, but you would be wrong. Well, you might be correct on the dimensions, but you would be wrong on the acreage by a factor of 4.

Correct....200X220 is an acre last time I looked...

YES, you're right GH 1950. I did the calculation for ONE acre, not 4 acres. My bad.

4 acres in a square would be about 420 feet per side.
So you could get 80 yards' of range distance, and room for a safe backstop, shooting away from the road at a perpendicular angle.

Look at the positive side - if you had that one acre in a 100' X 400' configuration, you could set up a fine shooting range.
