On the evening of October 26, Ken and Taylor Long got their foster children Keelan (9 years old) and Charlette (6 Months old) to bed. Around 10:00 pm, Taylor was in bed watching TV when she smelled burning plastic. Taylor woke Ken up and told him something was wrong. Ken went to the other end of the house and they both heard a loud crackling. Ken said he felt heat coming from over his head and opened the attic stair door at the entrance to Keelan’s room. When Ken opened the attic, he saw that the whole attic was on fire. He told Taylor to get the kids and go outside and to call 911. Taylor got both kids and went outside. When she got there, she saw that the whole garage was on fire. The whole family was barefoot and in their pajamas. Ken went back into the house and was able to rescue the dogs.
The smoke detectors and alarm system never went off during the whole ordeal. The house has been looked at by the adjuster and is determined to be a total loss. The Longs got out with just the clothes on their backs and their vehicles.
Taylor is a Dispatcher at the Spalding County Sheriff’s Office, where she has also worked as a Property Clerk and a Detention Deputy.
